Kinship Care

Kinship care is the raising of children by grandparents, other extended family members, and adults with whom they have a close family-like relationship such as grandparents, godparents or close family friends because biological parents are unable to do so for whatever reason. Legal custody of a child may or may not be involved, and the child may be related by blood, marriage, or adoption.

Kinship care may reduce the number of home placements children experience; allow children to maintain connections to communities, schools, and family members; and increase the likelihood of eventual reunification with birth parents. It keeps many children out of the foster care system.

Resources and services are not always readily accessible and often Kinship Families are not aware of those services, isolating them from each other those needed resources.

Family Caregivers

There are over 65 million Americans who are providing care for others. Frequently, family caregivers feel isolated as they deal with some of the most overwhelming experiences and tasks in their lives.

A Family Caregiver is defined as someone who provides unpaid care for a family member. Many family members who are providing such care don’t consider themselves to be “caregivers”. They feel they are just doing what comes naturally, whether they are providing care in the home, across town or across the country. Caregiving is a role that can take a toll emotionally, physically and mentally.

Kids, Kin ‘n Caregivers is here to help caregivers take better care of themselves so that they can take better care of loved ones in the caregiving journey.

Mission

We at Kids Kin 'n Caregivers know that service to children, families and caregivers represents a fundamental requirement in the community.  We are committed to the professional support of those in our community in need of support, in need of service and in need of a voice.

Kids, Kin ‘n Caregivers was established in the Hampton Roads community to improve the health and stability of individuals and families through the provision of goods, funding and services to kinship families (grandparents raising grandchildren or relative caregivers) and caregivers (family, professional and volunteer). We are a not-for profit organization dedicated to providing programs, services, activities and education throughout the to benefit Kinship families and caregivers.
